How to Buy Seafood in Bulk for Ramadan Without Losing Freshness

Mar 11, 2025

Stocking up on high-quality seafood at the beginning of Ramadan can save time and make meal prep easier—but only if you choose and store it correctly! Whether you're planning hearty Iftar feasts or light Suhoor meals, here’s how to buy seafood in bulk while keeping it fresh, flavorful, and safe all month long:

Opt for Flash-Frozen, Never Thawed Seafood

- Always select flash-frozen seafood, meaning it was frozen immediately after fishing, to lock in nutrients and freshness.

- Avoid seafood with excess ice crystals or signs of thawing and refreezing, as this affects texture and taste.

Look for Vacuum-Sealed Seafood

- Whether you’re buying salmon, shrimp, or local fish, opt for vacuum-sealed packaging. This prevents freezer burn and preserves the fresh taste.

- Ensure the packaging is airtight, with no leaks or air pockets

Clean & Sustainably Sourced

- If buying fresh seafood like mussels, or scallops, ensure they have a clean, briny scent

.

- Choose wild-caught fish or Norwegian salmon for superior flavor and nutrition.

Check for Firm Texture & Bright Color

- For local fish: The flesh should be firm and springy, with clear, bright eyes and shiny scales.

- For shrimp & lobster: The shell should feel tight and glossy, not slimy.

- For fillets: The surface should be moist but not mushy

 Storing Tips:

- Keep seafood stored at -18°C or lower in its*original vacuum-sealed packaging.

- Never thaw and refreeze seafood—this affects the texture of delicate fish

Best Thawing Method:

- Always thaw frozen shrimp, scallops, and fish fillets overnight in the fridge or under cold running water—never at room temperature.

Pro Tip: Buy your seafood in bulk at the start of Ramadan and store it properly to enjoy quick, hassle-free cooking all month!
